Trusha from the Future Leaders of Nottingham programme discusses leadership, her leadership journey and the Future Leaders of Nottingham programme.
What is leadership? This is a question that many of us ask ourselves. Leadership is a complex process that is very different to each individual. For me this journey has taken many years and several paths. I have engaged in different leadership programmes that I have been directed to, each one completely different from one another; some full of theory and advice and some full of discussions and reflections.
I have recently been on a journey to find my leadership style and understand what this new team leader role requires of me. I have learnt to view leadership as a linear process to achieve a common goal and shared objectives would be defined.
Leadership is subjective and each individual will define this differently. How is it defined to me, I find myself asking. Recently I have been directed to the Future Leaders of Nottingham Programme run by Renewal Trust. This was a programme that I hadn’t heard much about but it was highly recommended by a colleague. Having looked into the programme, I felt that it matched my development needs perfectly. Future leaders, an intensive programme that was designed for diverse people who want to make a difference. This was perfect for what I wanted to achieve.
I have come to learn that leadership is about supporting and enabling my team to be the best that they can be and to be able to deliver the best service, as a team. Leadership to me, as an individual, is much more than that – it is about demonstrating purpose and passion whilst engaging with people.
So far I have learnt that leadership is who you are as well as what you do. It isn’t about seniority or position, we are all leaders at different levels and we can all make a difference.
The future leaders programme has been a reflective leadership process so far to help me to understand who I am as a person and how that has an impact on my job role. Leadership is an influential process and we can influence from all levels, in all trades to translate our visions into reality. This is an ongoing learning need and will change throughout my career.
There are many leadership styles, skills and theories I have yet to learn. I am identifying leadership from a different perspective and I look forward to seeing where this journey takes me and how this will influence my practice in the future.
